The Battle of the Coral Sea deserves more attention than it typically receives. Long relegated to the shadows of its more celebrated naval milestone, Midway, the Battle of the Coral Sea set the stage upon which the cast of the Pacific campaign played their parts. The Battle of Midway is often regarded as the signature naval battle of World War II and the turning point in the war in the Pacific. It’s true that Midway, coming just six months after the devastation of Pearl Harbor, did alter the destiny of the Pacific campaign.

But before Midway, the adversaries fought the Battle of the Coral Sea. After the battle, when historians had had enough time to assess the events and results, they decided that, while it was a tactical defeat for the Allies, it was at the same time a strategic victory for them. The Japanese loss of carriers was destined to loom heavily over the next naval battle between the Allies and the Imperial Japanese Navy because the Japanese could not replace the carriers it had lost. Nor did it have the number of trained pilots that were needed to replace the ones lost, a point which first hit home as the Japanese suffered losses of aircraft and pilots in the Coral Sea fight.

If not for the Battle of the Coral Sea the month before Midway, the Allies might have faced a much more lethal Japanese navy which would have had six carriers to call upon. Instead, the Japanese only had four carriers to bring against the three American carriers. That evened the playing field and gave the Americans an advantage that, if not for the Coral Sea fight, they might have lacked.
