THE ESSAYS INCLUDED in this volume were originally prepared for a con-ference held at Princeton in May 2004 around the theme “Kant and the Early Moderns.” The content of the volume is actually more modest than this ambitious title might lead the reader to believe. Only a few of the early-modern f i gures discussed by Kant are under consideration here, and to ensure the unity of the volume, the ten essays selected for it are all focused on issues in metaphysics and what we today call epistemology and philosophy of mind. Nevertheless, the chosen f i gures are suff i ciently prominent, both in their own right and in relation to Kant’s explicit dis-cussion of them, for this selection to offer a signif i cant glimpse into the myths and realities of Kant’s philosophical heritage.
