Griffith and Guts start out as room mates, but eventually develop a sort of fwb arrangement. They grow close and become really good friends, and eventually both of them realize they want something more, but they never found the right timing. Eventually, Guts has to leave and he can't explain why, which is devastating for Griffith, and one year later, he visits only to find out that much has changed. The first time they see each other is in a club, and when their eyes meet, Guts knows he's a goner.
